The purpose of this page is to make available in one place the opportunity to see questions, brief answers, and who is involved. In some cases a follow-up conversation is in order but the general details are here to read.

How do I -

  • Reserve an aircraft? - Aircraft reservations for VAWG are done on Flight Schedule Pro. Contact Col Mike Portanova at 757.291.7793 to obtain a login and password.

  • Obtain a Flight Release? - Contact a VAWG recognized Flight Release Officer. These are published on the VAWG Paperless Wing.

  • Obtain a Mission Activity Number? (insurance coverage) - Complete this Mission Activity Number Request Form and email as an attachment to the Group Commander Capt James E. Byrd. A Mission Activity Number will be emailed back to the requestor. If you have questions about the activity, call 757.817.2129.

  • Get a validation for training at Group level? -

There are two kinds of validations, one is a training validation (i.e. IS-100, IS-700). For these validations you must send the certificate as an attachment to Capt James E. Byrd as proof of your training. The Group Commander will then validate the document at Group Level.

The other training validation is OPS Quals validations submitted in MIMS that reflect a completed SQTR witnessed by your Unit Commander. Once you complete these, your Unit Commander validates. These are automatically forwarded to the Group Commander where the validation is reviewed again for correctness. As long as the MIMS validation request follows all G2 SQTR Policy Requirments for approval, the validation is rather quick. Otherwise, your Unit Commander is notified as to why the validation was rejected and corrections are expected before resubmission for validation.

  • Participate in funded Mission Pilot (MP) training?

The MP must be a qualified mission pilot though they may sit in the right seat while the Mission Pilot trainee sits in the left.

    • Plan the sortie -
      • Define and schedule A/C.
      • Define PIC.
      • Define crew.
      • Define objective(s).
      • F104.
      • TRM.
      • W&B.

    • Submit the sortie for approval to the IC.
    • Receive sortie number.
    • Request/receive flight release for all planned sorties. (do not confuse reception of a sortie number with a flight release).
    • Fly sortie(s).
    • RTB and secure A/C. Record squawks.
    • Refuel and fill out a VAF11. Note: A VAF11 is required on every A or B mission code whether the aircraft is refueled or not. How the bill is paid is not a consideration. If the fuel terminal would not take the multiservice card and you had to pay on your own then include a F108 & your personal receipt.
    • Finish populating the forms with correct mission execution data.
    • Scan the F104 and VAF11 with at least 150 dpi resolution and submit paperwork to the IC via attachment.
    • On "A" or "B" missions with an IC, the IC enters the flight data in WMIRS.

  • Make a complaint? -

There is a chain of command to follow - initially, this means your immediate supervisor in the management chain.

    • A member contacts their Unit Commander.
    • A Unit Commander or Group Staff contacts their Group Commander.
    • A Group Commander or Wing Staff contacts the Wing Chief of Staff.
    • The Wing Chief of Staff contacts the Wing Vice Commander.
    • The Wing Vice Commander contacts the Wing Commander.

If you do not receive resolution then with the foreknowledge of your immediate supervisor you may contact the next higher echelon for continued discussion.

    Do not violate this policy.
