Mission Ground Team Training Complete

Seventeen squadron seniors and cadets attended Mission Ground Team Member training Jan. 17 at Fort Pickett.

Southside Squadron invited the squadron to participate. Group 4 commander Maj. Randy Hardy served as evaluator.

Danville Squadron Commander 1st Lt. Mark Evans called the event a "great day of training and fun."

Danville UDF training a success

Danville composite squadron trained 29 members January 10 in urban direction finding skills.

Capt. Mike Kirk of Blacksburg, Va, conducted the class at Danville Regional Airport.

Nine seniors and 20 cadets braved sub-freezing temperatures to attend the course, which puts the squadron that much closer to mission-ready status.

While a number of 101T cards were signed-off, Kirk plans to return to Danville to conduct the additional training missions required for members to be mission qualified.

Ground team training set

Twenty members of Danville Composite Squadron will travel to Ft. Pickett, Va, to attend a special Ground Team Member training course.

Following the course, graduates will be qualified in ground team operations.

While the CAP is traditionally known for conducting air searches, it is ground-team members who make direct contact with targets.

Danville officer takes charge

Danville Squadron Commander 1st Lt. Mark Evans is the new Virginia 2003 Encampment Commander.

Evans took command of the Danville Composite Squadron in December.

Lt. Andy Brady will serve as the encampment's deputy commander.

"Lieutenant Evans served as the Chief TAC for 2003, as well as participated in the 2002 encampment," said Capt. Andrea Elmer, Virginia Wing Director of Cadet Programs. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the encampment."

Utah Wing - Aircraft sustains damage during practice

On 18 Jan 04, at 1040 mountain standard time, a Cessna 182Q, N5202N, owned by the Civil Air Patrol, operated by the Utah Wing and piloted by a private pilot, sustained substantial damage during a hard landing at St. George Municipal Airport, St. George, Utah. The 73 year-old private pilot in command (PIC) and the 72 year-old commercially rated pilot/passenger on board the airplane were not injured. The pilot had 800 total flight hours, primarily in a Piper Colt. He had flown a total of 17 hours in the C-182, with approximately 4 hours in the last 90 days.

This was his first C-182 flight without a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). The sortie was a proficiency flight operating in visual meteorological conditions (VMC). This local flight originated at approximately 1030.

The pilot reported that he was doing touch and go landings. On his third landing, the pilot said the airplane bounced, porpoised in the air, and then came down on the nose. The pilot executed a go around, flew the airplane around the pattern, and made a full-stop landing.

Postflight inspection of the airplane revealed that the lower cowling was wrinkled, the lower firewall was bent aft, and one propeller blade was bent aft at the blade tip. Flight control continuity was confirmed. The NTSB and the Utah Wing are investigating this accident. This is the third CAP aircraft accident of FY04.
